PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Unfortunately,
there has not been any significant progress in the culture of peace and
non-violence in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria, where our
organisation operates. The main cause of violence and breach to peace
in this area is poverty and the desruction of local peoples sources of
livelihoods by multinational oil companies operatring in the area.
However,
our organisation has been trying reduce the incidence if violence in
this Region by inniating some projects that will empower local people
economically and keep them busy and remove their minds from violent
tendencies.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The main obstacle to our programmes so far are:
* limited funding to implement economic empowerment projects
*The intensive militarisation of the niger delta region by the oil companies and the federal government of nigeria
* limited access to the local communities where conflicts are rampant, because of the riverine nature of the area.
* hostile nature and language problems associated with the local communities in the niger delta
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Our
organisation has organised series of seminals and workshop which brings
together traditional rulers and other leaders of local communities in
the Niger Delta to enghliten and educate them about how to make peace
reighn in their domain. Youth leaders in local communities have also
been invited to peace-promotion workshops organised by our organisation
Our
organisation has also been implementing socio-economic projects, such
as skill acquisition programmes, micro-credit sceme and adult education
for school drops all in a bid to keep every one busy and divert their
minds frmo violent tendencies
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Our
experience have shown that economic deprivation and poverty could breed
violence. So, our advice is that all effort shoul be made to ensure
that local people are economically empowered and poverty eradication be
made a top priority in the agenda of local and international
organisations as well as national governments
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Our
organisation would be interested in joining a network of local and
international civi society groups promoting peace around the world.
But, right now, our organisation is a memeber of the Niger Delta Peace
Movement, a regional network promoting peace ans sustainable
development in the conflict-ridden Nigeri Delta Region of Nigeria
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Our
organisation plan to expand its programe of peace promotion from the
Niger Delta Region of Nigeria to the whole country in the next decade
of 2005-2010.
To this end, peace dialogue and inter-religious
ans inter-enthnic conference will held to try and end the perrenial
conflicts between moslems and christains in the northern part of
Nigeria and the incessant clashes between rive ethnic groupd in
Nigeria. The issue of environmental and resources conflict between the
people of the Niger Delta and the oil cpmpanies/federal government of
Nigeria would also be addressed.
