PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
No, the situation became much worse. Especially after the election of George Bush and his hawks in the US.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Especially
after the election of George Bush and his hawks in the US, obstacles to
peace raised. Their agenda is to control the essential resources in the
world, especially oil. This is why they are fighting the war against
terrorism.
It's a pity that countries like Great Brittain, the Netherlands, Australia and Italy are following this agenda of the US. Fighting
for freedom is also confused with terrorism, like Chechina, Palestina,
Xinjiang (Uygur territory in China). Further more human rights don't
count anymore (Tibet, Uzbekistan) because China and Uzbekistan are
'with' the US.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Supporting protests against the war in Iraq, on several occasions.
Campaigning
against neoliberal globalisation; a corporate led agenda which leads to
the profit for a few, at the expense of the poor, the needy and nature.
We need to fight the root causes of terrorism. - give people back their territory (Palestina, Iraq, Chechena); -
relieve debts, so poor countries don't have to give away their natural
resources to allready affluent countries. They need to supply their own
basic needs. - withdraw American troops from (holy) Islam land (Saudi Arabia and Iraq); -
develop a moderate consumption style, stop poluting the world with
greenhouse gasses, stop destroying peoples living area by mining and
oil - and gas extraction; - dialogue between world religions, so we can use our universal values against neoliberalism; - UN above WTO and bilateral and regional agreements.
We
also support by money, social movements, NGO's and individuals who
fight for justice, human rights, land, political influence, in
developing countries.

All
these pictures were taken in a demonstration against the war in Iraq.
This was organised by the Platform against the new war (Platform tegen
de nieuwe oorlog), in february 2003 in Amsterdam. XminusY is a member
of this platform.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
-
Go away from this corporate led, neoliberal agenda. Abolish green
washing by the Global Compact. Binding multilateral agreements instead
of public-private partnerships. - Ask for a worldwide boycot to the
US, as long as they don't sign UN treaties (Kyoto, international Court
of justice, Multilateral Environmental agreements etc.). - Hold Israel to the UN resolutions, withdraw from occupied Palestina. - Don't confuse freedom fighters with terrorism, give people back their territory (Palestina, Iraq, Chechena); -
Relieve debts, so poor countries don't have to give away their natural
resources to allready affluent countries. They need to supply their own
basic needs. - Withdraw American troops from (holy) Islam land (Saudi Arabia and Iraq); -
Develop a moderate consumption style, stop poluting the world with
greenhouse gasses, stop destroying peoples living area by mining and
oil - and gas extraction. - Promote a dialogue between world religions, so we can use our universal values against neoliberalism. - UN above WTO and bilateral and regional agreements. - Stop the arms trade.
