PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
On the basis of the following activities I wil try to appoint points of measurability on the road to 2010. Since
september 2002 we (people of some organisations for peace, the council
of churches and the dialogue-group for Moslims and Christians) make a
circle of silence in the shoppingstreet of Beverwijk, one of the places
in the region of IJmond at every first saturday in the month. The circle of silence is an expressions of our anxiety about the expansion of violence in the world, near by and far away. Our
device on a pilar in the middle of the circle is: to stand still for
peace and have a choice for dialogue in substitution of violence.
We can read the reactions in the street; The agreement build up. Bystanders come and stand also in the circle.(15 à 30) There is a growing circle of e-mailadresses (50) of people, who are interested in our activities for peace. Next months we are acquainted with the eight points of action of the UNESCO and sticks them on the pilar. We have noticed, that it is more clear for the bystanders, what is in our attention. There is more reference. Schools are more interesting in peace-education and peermediation

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
continuing negative publicity in the media about the moslim-culture
since Theo van Gogh was murdered has its consequences for the increased
closesness in the Moslim-community. They are less presented in the
circle of silence.
Budgetary deficits endangers the promise made by the municipal-office to finance peace-educationactivities in the future.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We have in the year 2004 organised a quest along the coast of the Netherlands. We search for activities of peace. Our
practical search had also the intention to got an investment of
activities of peace within the scope of the Decennium of a Culture for
Peace and Non-Violence for the Children in the World. After that we
had a national meeting between more peace-organisations. The theme was:
violence; power or powerlessness. This meeting was at 12 march of this
year (2005) We have build a network. In May,2005, I have a walk for the 'innocent' children in the world.
In 2004 the Platform for Peace in the IJmond and the group women
for peace have organised in coöperation with the municipal office a
project for peace-education for all the schools in Heemskerk, a place
in the IJmond. The teachers have told about the Decennium.
The Platform for Peace and the group Women for Peace in the IJmond have organised the exhibition 'Forgiveness' The
school for navigators has given the students tge instruction to make
inquires into the differentiation between revenge ans forgiveness. A
following action is to make a quest for the search to activities of
forgiveness in the Netherlands in reference to the decennium for peace
and Non-Violence.
