PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
No
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
most important obstacles remain as before, identifying our
principal activities and then, through promotion using a new website
and direct approaches to the funding community, seeking financial
support in realising them. Our supportive but dispersed membership
demands logistic support which currently we cannot properly provide.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
SfP has a membership of retired generals and admirals from many countries, working together in the cause of peace.
In
Colombo, Sri Lanka (2000), they agreed the Colombo Declaration which
led to the development of the "New Initiatives in Co-operation for
Peace Awards" and the "Virtual Library for Peace Operations".
SfP
maintains close links with the Joint Defence Concepts Centre in the UK
and allied establishments. A published paper sets out to show
opportunities for lessons learned and shared in disaster relief
management have parallels in Peace Support Operations. Another
paper addresses the ICT challenge in this field. All documents are
available by e-mail.
SfP members will next meet in London around
1 June 2005 to attend a conference to mark the International Day of UN
Peacekeepers. Before then, the SfP website will be activated.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Engage civil society more; to this end, pursue the Cardoso Report recommendations which appear to be doomed otherwise.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
