PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Peace,
a most wanted word is uttered internationally by all. In our
region, for the last four to five years, communual clashes are
not heard and people, may be due to growth of literacy and awareness
are coming to the main stream of a peaceful social life structure.
Before that, in Tamilnadu, comunal clashes were very common and
the government had to concentrate on this menace leaving other
progressive policies secondary.
As an social organisation, we
have united poor women as possible by us by forming women self help
groups comprising the supressed classes of S.C., B.C. and other weaker
sections in our area.
We will work for this good cause always.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
In
one word, we can simply say 'ignorance'. Our first priority is to
give awareness to the people of our area that prosperity or progress
would be achieved only in a peaceful society through non
violence.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
As
already indicated by us, regular meetings are conducted for the women
self help groups and eminent personalities from medical, social
welfare, and other relevant fields are attending the seminars conducted
by us. Seminars and awareness camps will definitely help people
thinking in the right way and agression or violence will vanish.
We
are writing to so many organisations in this field and some are
responding positively. Weekly news letters are received by e.mail
from various international organisations. We have to do more in this field and guidance from international organisations is a must for us.
We
used to conduct weekly meetings of our self help groups discussing
various issues suchas gender equality, empowement of women and their
social responsibilities. This week, i.e. on 24th April 2005, we
arranged for a special group discussion on CULTURE OF PEACE . In
addition to our self help group members, some students were also
invited and they participated enthusiastically and expressed their
views and ideas. They are of the view that seminars and camps may be conducted on this noble cause of preaching peace.
The following are the points our organisation wants to expose:
1) PEACE IN FAMILY: 'Charity begins at Home'; like that, cultue
of peace begins at house. Evey family must lead a peaceful life.
The evils affectng peace in a family are: a)
ALCOHOLISM: Most of the families in our area, we witness, are
experiencing the menace of alcoholism and the outcome of alcoholism is
frustration, anger and collapse of family setup. Alcoholism and drug
abuse should be nipped, since it's destruction of families can not be
numbered. A family head, earning a daily wage of Rs. 100/- per day
spends Rs. 50/- or more for alcohol and from the meagre balance amount,
he can not manage his daily bread. In addition to meals, he has
to meetout other expenses also. Here comes agression, aversion in
family. The womenfolk are helpless and have to earn something for
their family. In this miserable situation, the children in the
family who are witnessing the daily ugly happenings turn towards
violence, agression and they become even criminals. Hence,
alcoholism should be nipped from the society, since it's outcomes are
agony, depression and destruction of family setup. Peace can not
be expected. b) GOOD EDUCATION: Education without
morality is a mere waste. Where morality and peace exist, the
society will go towards prosperity and it will flourish in all fields.
In the primary school levels itself, peace is to be teached and
preached and non violence shoule be introduced as a complusory subject
in schools and colleges. Yoga and meditation, the other aspects
of shaping the children should be taken into consideration by
educationists.
To
conculde, I am to say that the seeds of peace and non violence sown in
the children's hearts will reflect effectively. Awareness camps
and seminars are to be conducted in each and every village and also in
urban areas, stressing that prosperity is not possible without peace.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
GOOD EDUCATION WITH SYLLABUS FOCUSING NON VIOLENCE MAY BE INTRODUCED IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS LEVEL.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
WE
ARE FOSTERING A PRIMARY SCHOOL IN OUR AREA I.E. VIRUDHUNAGAR.
SPECIALL CLASSES WILL BE CONDUCTED IN THE PRIMARY LEVEL ITSELF TO
