PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes.
Education for Peace Globalnet acts promoting interaction among leaders
of meaningful projects and organizations through electronic means and
presencial meetings. Since our World Meeting in Geneva 2000, around 300
projects from the five continents joined the network. Each project has
a page at the www.redepaz.org website and/or presented its reports in
the II World Meeting at São Paulo and four Continental Meetings in
Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe. In 2005 the North American and
South American Meetings will conclude this cycle of Continental
Meetings. The projects registered in the website compose a publication
called "Learning Book".
A world community for learning and
action began to be formed supporting the cooperation among the leaders
and their organizations, potencializing actions and focusing on
concrete and creative solutions.
Considering this half of the
decade, many networks concerned to Culture of Peace started or
intensified their contribution for the flow of knowledge and
information among their members and with their partners. Education for
Peace Globalnet evolved from 10 partner organizations in 2000 to 34 in
2005.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
In
the area of information and knowledge flow, one of the main obstacles
is the digital divide. Large numbers of the world population has not
access to computers. The educational deficit and cultural isolation in
some areas of the planet is responsible for another main problem: the
low level of participation in the world social and cultural life. The
lack of an integrated concept of planetary citizenship prevents the
majority of people from an effective participation in building the
basis for a culture of peace, from the individual, home, community to
the global level. Crystallized concepts and corresponding interests and
power structures based on separation - nations, religions, gender,
races - prevent real changes in the economic, political and cultural
spheres in the entire world.
