PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
The
Women's UN Report Network is based on the UN Study on the Status of
Women and Freedom of Religion or Belief and Traditions. This is the
only official United Nations document, that addresses this important
nexus. WUNRN is a website, programs, and daily ListServe, that goes
throughout the world from grass roots organizations to high ranking
United Nations and government participants. WUNRN offers reference
materials, news releases, research, resource documents as a free and
independent media for multidimentional issues of the rights of women
and girls, and including relating to peace. Examples are abuse of women
and girls by peacekeeping forces, and rights of women to participate in
the peace process. WUNRN also networks closely with Women's
International League for Peace & Freedom and WILPF PeaceWomen, and
both are part of WUNRN.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Patriarchy
and male power, money, government control, and military domination,
still rule the world. Women have yet to realize the goals of UN
Security Council Resolution 1325 and CEDAW. With the strength of the UN
Study and the multinational dialogue and actions, WUNRN brings forward
the issues of women and peace and tries to build bridges in creating
new entry points and discourse on women's rights and including in the
peace process, whether on the global issues of war or community issues
of peace and harmony. A major challenge is when religious and tradition
law, customs, traditions, come into conflict with international law and
universal women's and girls' human rights. WUNRN works on this daily,
and is considered the most active Gender ListServe in the world.
Further, WUNRN participates on the United Nations level as at the UN
Commission on the Status of Women and the UN Human Rights Commission.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
WUNRN
continues to build out website references and very much relating to
peace through human rights for women and girls, and with men and boys.
We believe in equality for all persons. WUNRN daily posts ListServe
articles relating to peace and relationship to women and girls. WUNRN
has conducted Workshops at the UN, and in India and Pakistan. In India,
the WUNRN Workshop focused on Widows, and very much on Widows of
Conflict. In Pakistan, the WUNRN Workshop was with Social Harmony &
Development Organization, women and men working in Punjab for peace and
human rights. WUNRN's mandate is to include all six sectors:
Human Rights NGO's, Women's NGO's, Academia, Government,
Religions & Associations, and Civil Society. Additional WUNRN
Workshops and actions are scheduled around the world as in Korea,
Thailand, Europe. WUNRN networks regularly with programs trying to
include women and girls in the peace process, to increase
participation, empowerment, strategies, and successful outcomes.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
The
Women's UN Report Network hopes that more monitoring and accountability
can be built into United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
WUNRN wishes respect and dignity for women and girls to be enforced in
the UN PeaceKeeping forces. WUNRN hopes that human rights will
supersede politics at the United Nations. WUNRN would hope to see
tolerance, understaning, and peace more in all dimensions of the UN
system, with more egalitarian presence for all.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
The
Women's UN Report Network website shows some participating
organizations in the WUNRN Anthology. Our daily WUNRN ListServe reaches
thousands on a global level. Just a few examples of the expanded
networks of WUNRN are with the European Women's Lobby, AWID -
Association of Women's Rights in Development, Network of East-West
Women, UN NGO Committees on the Status of Women in Geneva and New York,
Amnesty International, Women's International League for Peace &
Freedom, and Femmes Africa Solidarite.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
WUNRN
will continue, in the Decade for a Culture of Peace, build our website
as a trusted, authentic resource, build on te UN Study focus of WUNRN,
the only UN Study on the Status of Women and Freedom of Religion or
Belief and Traditions. We will continue to expand the possibilities of
the UN Study in leverage for human rights and peace. We will conduct
WUNRN Seminars and Workshops with peace as a major component.
