PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes,
The Sawiris Foundation adopts a 3-phase programme strategy to create
real job opportunities and face the unemployment crisis: Evaluation of
job market needs and identification of actual vacant job opportunities
that need qualified labour; agreement with employers to provide jobs
whenever qualified candidates are available; training job applicants to
fulfil the requirements of the available vacancies, according to
internationally recognized standards. Such discipline guarantees
adequate training based on actual market needs, and secures job
opportunities for graduates of the training programmes funded by the
Sawiris Foundation.
Measures of success: * Number of job opportunities made available. * Project sustainability after the funding has stopped. * Employment of all trainees by the end of the training programme. * Providing adequate training based on actual market needs.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Major obstacles encountered :
* Selection of experienced, reliable executive bodies for the projects. * Civil societies do not provide training to meet actual market needs. * Lack of data and statistics related to fields of development and employment.
Measures of failure:
* Pause of the project activities after the funded had stopped. * Failure to employ the trainees by the end of the training programme. * Failure to tailor training programmes according to actual market needs.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Action areas : *
Funding and supporting efforts aiming to raise the living standards of
low-incomers in the fields of health, vocational training and small
enterprises. * Operating in all areas of social, cultural and educational development. * Boosting small business enterprises by providing technical, administrative and financial (via loans) support. * Helping students pursue their studies abroad and awarding scholarships upon the consent of concerned bodies. *
Since its establishment, the Sawiris Foundation has funded many
projects all around Egypt; around 30 projects in different fields
providing around 5,000 job opportunities. In the field of health, the
Foundation has trained youths to become home medical service
assistants, hospitals primary health services assistants, teachers in
nursing schools, vaccination coordinators in campaigns targeting
children and pregnant women, nursing superintendents and specialists in
health care units dedicated to diabetic children. In addition, the
Foundation is currently training kindergarten nutrition specialists,
and trainers of handicapped and special needs people so as to merge
them into society. * To support micro and small business
enterprises, the Sawiris Foundation has awarded grants to build two
bakeries and trained unemployed youths to run them. It has also
established two stations to deal with solid wastes, and awarded grants
to civil associations to create loaning units for micro enterprises or
to widen the scope of the already existing unit which serves women who
support their families, agricultural producers, fresh graduates, and
the physically handicapped; in addition to improving the dairy
production skills of rural women.
* As to vocational training,
the Foundation has trained youths on wielding. It has also granted them
scholarships in the field of tourism which entitles them to work in
hotels and maritime companies (on yachts). The Foundation is currently
training youths on paper and cloth printing techniques, as well as
manufacture of ready-made clothes which gives rise to Egyptian
products. The Foundation is also establishing an employment bureau in
the Al-Mukattam area (Cairo) to qualify youths to work in untraditional
jobs, such as driving together with simple house maintenance work,
cooking and techniques of serving in banquets and parties, etc. *
The Sawiris Foundation supports developmental job marketing by training
graduates to work in primary, medium and high administration in
non-governmental institutions. * In commemoration of the founding
board director, the Foundation awards the Ibrahim Shehata Grant to 1
student every 3 years, to obtain a PhD degree from Queen Mary College
(London University) in international development law
Most important activities developed :
*
The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development is the first donor civil
organization in Egypt dedicated to sustainable social development. It
was established to reflect the efforts of the Sawiris family which stem
from their deep conviction in the importance of active participation of
the private sector in boosting social development. The Foundation
focuses on providing funding and technical support for projects that
would create new job opportunities, through executive partners. *
Since the Sawiris-funded projects depend on cooperation between the
civil community, government and private sector, the Foundation may
assign the implementation of projects to a governmental body, civil
association, educational institutions or the private sector. * The
Sawiris Foundation adopts a 3-phase programme strategy to create real
job opportunities and face the unemployment crisis: Evaluation of job
market needs and identification of actual vacant job opportunities that
need qualified labour; agreement with employers to provide jobs
whenever qualified candidates are available; training job applicants to
fulfil the requirements of the available vacancies, according to
internationally recognized standards. Such discipline guarantees
adequate training based on actual market needs, and secures job
opportunities for graduates of the training programmes funded by the
Sawiris Foundation. * The Sawiris Foundation encourages pioneering
and innovative projects. On selecting the projects to be funded, it
considers the possibility of reapplying those projects on a wider scale
so as to contribute to sustainable social development. * The
Foundation has adopted a new trend to attract civil societies by
announcing a contest for the creation of job opportunities, where
projects targeting different community strata and supporting the
Foundation's mission are selected. This also included a series of
workshops introducing the views of the societies applying for the
contest, and the Foundation's discipline. Field visits were made to
institutionally evaluate the societies and to work together on the
project designs.
