* Supporting several environmental societies * Implementation of various environmental projects * Winning important court cases to protect the environment * Responding to most environmental complaints
Measures of success: * Public involvement * Involvement of executive officials and decision makers * Improvement of capabilities and organizational structure * Public environmental awareness as well as awareness of legal obligations to environment.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Major obstacles :
* Failure to execute the court's decisions in some of the cases which the Association has won. * Lack of awareness of legal obligations to the environment of some individuals and executive officials. * Personal interests overlap and sometimes have the upper hand over public welfare.

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Action areas : * Protection, maintenance and development of natural and urban environment * Appealing and winning support. * Promotion of environmental education and raising awareness on legal obligations to environment. * Support and empowerment of environmental civil societies.
Most important activities :
* Control of industrial pollution in the western part of Alexandria. * Protecting sea turtles against extinction off Alexandria's Mediterranean shores. * The ‘environment parliament’ where Association members and citizens meet with local and executive officials * Environmental education in schools *
Preservation of the archaeological and architectural heritage of
Alexandria, Rashid and Siwa; and establishment of a heritage
preservation forum. * The legal support project in cooperation with the Egyptian centre for the support of civil societies. *
Establishing a club for young vanguards of environment protection to
educate and raise awareness of youth on environmental issues. *
Materialization of the youth club activities, participation in
international conferences and launching campaigns to clean the
Mediterranean coasts

* Promoting awareness among the public on their environmental rights. * Involvement of the public, executive officials and decision makers in solving environmental problems. *
Establishing a centre in the Association to promote volunteering
culture, and compile a database for the volunteers and the bodies
interested to recruit them. * Promoting awareness of legal obligations to the environment and means of resorting to court arbitration whenever needed.
