PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
In
Brazil, 70 million people are still under the line of poverty. Million
of people could be nourished by taking advantage of the food
wasted, without spending additional resources in food production.
Malnutrition affects almost 30% of the Brazilian children, having as
consequences premature death or problems that affects their
physical and neurological development.
Caring for mankind
comes along with preserving life. The discernment shows
that if the natural resources available in the planet are used with
criteria and solidarity we could be living in different world ,
building another story with more peace, less violence, better quality
of life, ethics and moral. The importance on fighting
against waste is to say NO to: I don’t care to throw food
in the garbage while thousands of people have no access to food.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Lack
of basic food, lack of education, lack of qualification for
a big number of people who can not find a job, taking this
population to the grey area of criminality. The role of the
society is extremely important on the creation of its own
reality. This situation may go on as we accept or take for
granted that Brazil is, at the same time, one of the
richest countries in the world and one of the worse in economic
development (food, health, education, etc.). As people take
conscience of their role in the preservation of mankind, their country,
and the planet they live in, things will change slowly. At the end,
everything begins and ends at the level of the individual. Our personal
choices determine the reality around us. Democracy should
first guaranty the right to live, and to all the basic tools for their
development. Democracy should be participative not just
representative.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
The
NGO Banco de Alimentos, funded in 1998 has as main mission as a social
assistance institution: to fight against the waste of food and minimize
the effects of hunger. To assist charity organizations
granting access to good quality basic food to a larger number of
people and instruct the institutions how to serve well balanced meals
are also part of our mission. The core business is to
distribute the food “in nature” (vegetables, fruits, bread, etc.)
collected from the donators. This food represents a surplus of
trade, which otherwise would become garbage. To perform a nutritional education toward the entities assisted by us, to avoid a second possibility of waste. We teach attractive tasty low cost recipes with the nutrients required for a healthy diet.
Once a month, a two- days seminar is organized where we invite the
assisted entities to participate. A manual containing the
guidelines is presented and an attendance certificate is granted at the
end of each seminar. An individual backup is given to the assisted entities, regarding specific needs. As part of the education process the Food Bank participate in presentations in schools and universities.
Under a special agreement with an university from the nutrition field,
trainees have the opportunity to develop scientific research under the
coordination of the Food Bank nutritionist and the University
Coordinator. The 655.684 pounds of food distributed in 2004, helped forty five entities representing 18.991 people attended.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
To
change reality every human being should be engaged Human beings
only make changes when they feel it has a meaning for themselves.
People must feel that solidarity among human beings as well as
creation of a new model of society based on justice and truth
should be the basis for common Welfare .
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We have a good partnership with the volunteers of the Center of São Paulo, which in turn are mentioned at the UN. We have also a good flow of information with Banco Alimentare in Italy. More recently we started contact with Red Argentina de Banco de Alimentos. The NGO representantives also participate in seminars offered by Compania de Las Obras, held this year in Argentina.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
To continue collecting food and distributing to institutions registered at the NGO.
To maintain sustainable growth through new partnerships with the
objective of attending regions that we currently do not reach.. To organize Information Campaigns so as to increase the level of knowledge toward the terrible reality of waste.
