PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Progress
has been noteworthy in the area of human rights education. The
Brazilian government has created a Human Rights Education Committee and
a national plan of action has been launched.
Progress has also
been noted in the area of protection of the rights of the child as part
of the MDGs which are all part of a greater process towards peace.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
the lack of funds has prevented practical actions to be taken in the promotion of human rights education
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Many
initiatives have been noted in the period to train large numbers of
people in the area of human rights. For instance, our organization has
developed a course to train human rights agents all over the country.
Out of 1,000 registered participants in a distance learning program,
500 graduated in the program last March 2005 ( please see
www.gestordh.org.br )
Our organization has been a co-founder of
a network of NGOs with the mission of protecting human rights of
children. the network has presented a report to the Brazilian
government ( also available in English at www.redeamiga.org.br ) with
the main challenges that the Brazilian society is facing to guaranttee
the rights of the child.

Invest more in human rights education

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Partnership
in the area of human rights education has taken place along with the
National Secretariat for Human Rights, an agency of the Office of the
President.
In the area of the rights of the child the Child
Friendly Network( www.redeamiga.org.br) was a major achievement
bringing together 28 different NGOs.

Diverse
advocacy training courses for both youth and adults in the areas of
racism, health and rights of the children and youth
