PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

In our contact with management, staff and children of the various orphanages we have during the first half of the decade (2001-2005) seen nothing but a culture of peace and non-violence.

Our impact towards a culture of peace, with the small size of our organization, may be limited. We do however believe that we contribute in establishing positive attitudes towards a culture of peace through our work towards the children plus management and staff at the orphanages.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

The task of  transferring our monetary assistance from the local banks to the orphanages seems to be of increasing difficulty due to bureaucracy and/or other non-acceptable reasons.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

Our association, which is a politically and religiously independent NGO, was established in 1972 and has continuously since then worked with the following main objectives:

o Facilitate the education of deprived children and youth in Bangladesh
o Arrange for educational scholarships for orphaned children and youth in Bangladesh, of which 2/3 should be girls
o Arouse the interest of other organizations and public institutions for this work

Our association has presently approximately 400 supporters for approximately 400 orphans at six orphanages and one slum school in Bangladesh.

The Buddhist, Islamic, Hindu and Christian religions are represented at the institutions we support.

Our association has no employees. The total work is done on a voluntary basis mainly by the board members.

As we are an organization with volunteers only we regret to say that actions outside those of recruiting sponsors and giving support to our orphans have been made only to a small degree.

Based on our work we received in February this year the ATISH DILPANKAR PEACE AWARD “in recognition of the outstanding contribution towards the promotion of Peace , Humanity and Compassion”. This was awarded during a large arrangement in the Buddhist Prayer Hall at Dhammarajika in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The three most important parts of our work with the children: Food, human contact and schooling.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

Motivate the rich and more “developed” nations in assisting the poor countries through sustainable technology transfer, educational assistance and elimination of trade barriers.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Information exchange with other NGOs

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

o Intensify the recruitment of Norwegian sponsors in order to help additional orphans in Bangladesh
o Provide scholarships for higher education for a limited number of eligible and motivated children after Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC).
o Provide monetary assistance for the improvement of teachers in the English language
