PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

We have seen progress toward a culture of peace and non violence.

We had applause for our work in Flanders during the NPT-conference in New York. Belgium now has 200 mayors of peace, while there are only 1000 mayors of peace in the world. So a lot of work has to be done.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

Ministries and administration don't help us.  They only make promises but don't do much. This really can be improved!

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

In 2000 we started with the peaceweek-campaign: "We need you for peace". In 2001 we launched the campaign: "Europe is hearth/hard for peace". In 2002 we maked campaign for the child-soldiers and in 2003 we asked the help of the Flemish people for a real centre of peace in Flanders (now in 2005 we will have a peace institute under the umbrella of the Flemish parliament - unique in the world). In 2004 we stressed our Peaceweek-campaign on women as power for peace (UN-resolution 1325) and for 2005 we will ban all the nuclear weapons out of our world. We will plant 32,000 (peace) trees in Flanders (this is the same number of actual nuclear weapons). A massive nuclear heat peace balloon will follow the peace caravan through Flanders.

For September 2006 the peace week will campaign on the subject of youngsters in conflicted area - advocacy on their behalf is necesary.  For september 2007 we will point out a theme for war-refugees and their situation in countries like ours.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

Give little subvention for NGO's to help them with this theme because government doesn't always motivate citizens. Peace organisations do!
With a small amount we can do much more and sensibilize lot of people.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

peace week - Iansa - Pax Christi International - EPLO - ...

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

For 2005 we will ban all the nuclear weapons out of our world.
