PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

Our organization beleives in a motto, "there is no way to peace, but peace is the way". So, our attempt has been to practice peace not only in daily life by ourselves but also urge and encourage youths of Nepal to do so by themselves.

Having a glance at datas and figures of death in both party of maoists and army due to the ongoing armed conflict in Nepal: the situations seems deteoriating each and every day. However, the awareness of peace, the need and craving for peaceful way of life has been increased too. So, this first half of the decade: we have realized comes with a double stroke: fear of violence and at the same time hope of peace.

we don't have specific indicators to measure progress but we are analyzing these aspects through the opinions youth express through our regular youth interaction programme and also through various activities that we have been organizing in various occasions.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

The most important obstacles in terms of Nepal percieved by most of the Nepali people is definitely its political system. Nepal's political system, be it authotarian rana regime, few so called blissful years of democracy post 1951-1970 or autocratic panchayat rule till 1990's to restoration of democracy in 1991: Nepal's political system was never people led and based on people's wishes and aspirations. It has always been ruler led.

But more than that: there is a vicious circle of poverty: both economical and intellectual. We have always been copying things from outside. We have been brainwashed that other countries and their ways are better. We stopped to trust our own system, belief in our own culture, religion and our own spirituality.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

We haven't been able to do anything big. Neither we do believe that big things matter but rather we are trying to do small things to bring small changes.

we organize weekly programme named "seed of peace" for street and disadvantaged children. We share our knowledge and experiences with them and we at the same time been learning lot from them too. The major objective of this programme is to develop the innate potentiality and creativity of children that they would get strong foundation in their childhood to help them to lead peaceful life in their adulthood and afterwards.

Besides that we organize a monthly youth interaction programme named " Thoughts of Youth". In each programme we raise a burning issue and share our experiences and knowledge with each other. This programme has been very effective to bring like minded youth together in a same platform who beleive in the values of peace.

Our oraganization is recently formed since last year. Last year in international peace day we organized a one day youth conference with special focus on awareness of peace.

This year, we are planning to organize a 3 day in house camp. We are extensively planning for the event, which we hope would make a positive contributions to youths of Nepal

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

The first and foremost thing we realized is the need of spirituality and self awareness. This is the age of technical revolution. Our life is being more and more mechanized every day. This unnatural life style has breed a feeling of violence among youths.

If children ever since their early age are helped to develop their inner potentialit and express their creativity: things would be much better.

So, our organization more beleives in spiritual development than economic one.

We suggest that UN involve more and more youths in peace building process to envision a peaceful world in the days to come.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Our organization is closely linked with a big network of social organizations of Nepal. Our Patron, Dr.C.M. Yogi, principal of Hindu Vidya Peeth Nepal helps us to build this network much stronger and be more effective.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

We have a  plan to conduct an international peace conference in Nepal by the end of 2005. Nepal, being the cradle of spirituality and quiet famous for its mysticism and religious practices is the most ideal place to held a dialogue for peace, since it was from here that Budhha gave first message of peace.
