PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

a) As of the foundation of UNISOES in 1989 our actions were based on  the   culture of peace  to create a fraternal world without boundaries;
b) The organizations joining UNISOES have also supported the 2000 Manifest and its extensive actions;
c) With the culture of peace we have improved dialogue among participating organizations as well as have improved our engagement in social questions that are grieving  humanity.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

a) Financial resources;
b) Few volunteers and
c) People see culture of peace subjectively.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

a) Within each organization we began to think carefully about the meaning of culture of peace and its postulates;
b) We held meetings about solidary economy for a culture of peace;
c) We promoted the annual themes given by UN viewing the culture of peace and looking for a new worldwide order with local actions;
d) We realized campaigns about water: “preserve the planet” is one of the objectives of peace culture;
e) We organized and participated jointly with URI – United Religions Initiative – of the first Inter-Religious Retreat Meeting with the objective to strengthen the culture of peace.  This meeting was held at Itaici – São Paulo, where usually the National Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Brazil – CNBB is held;
f) We took part in inter-religious dialogues in Salvador/Bahia, with monthly meetings at different religious organizations where we examined carefully the common points and also held public events jointly with all religions, two of which were held in July 2003 and 2004 at the Rectory of Bahia’s Federal University with the title UNITED RELIGIONS FOR PEACE, and one event at a public environment at the Dique of Tororó opening the MUNICIPAL DAY FOR CULTURE AND PEACE on September 13th and 14th, 2004 finalized with speeches by all religion’s leaders who participated of the dialogue.
g) We participated of the MUNICIPAL DAY OF THE BATTLE AGAINST RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE, together with religious leaders at the Rectory of the Federal University of Bahia, on January 21st, 2004.
h) We promoted a Literary Contest for the 1st grade students in Salvador, with the theme A CALL FOR UNION – HOW TO PRACTICE UNITY WITHIN DIVERSITY.  Students had to present a writing about “If you were a congressman in your city what actions would you take to have more solidarity and union among people and less prejudice and intolerance?”.
i) We are stimulating the Culture of Peace at the educational system viewing the introduction of this theme in the schools’ curriculum;
j) We promoted a Program of Values Stock Market for Peace, an initiative viewing the utilization of virtues as basis for correct human relations, emphasizing investments  in actions for peace culture;
k) We prepared a cooking recipe called “ACTIVE PEACE RICE” created by one of the institutions participating of UNISOES, which was published in the UN’s book  in 2004 on behalf of the  International Year of Rice.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

a) Hold an open to the world UN assembly, identifying which countries support the culture of peace in their public, internal and external politics.
b) Hold a meeting with all peace culture agents spread around the world to strengthen friendship ties and exchange experiences;
c) Help countries working for peace culture and encourage the ones that are not doing it yet;
d) Encourage other countries to create Councils of Peace Culture within their governments with participation of civil society; and to create a Council of Peace Culture within the UNO with representatives of the Peace Culture Councils of each country, represented by the civil community.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

a) URI – United Religions Initiative
b) Justice between Genders Movement

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

a) Give support to all organizations that initiate actions for a culture of peace  and that desire to join the peace culture movement;
b) Support UN’s actions related to Peace Culture during the next years;
c) Promote meetings with themes that strengthen  peace culture
